2015 WGC Cadillac Championship

2015 WGC Cadillac Championship

Tournament: Staying in Florida, we move just down the world to the beautiful city of Miami for the WGC Cadillac Championship. Held at Trump National Doral since 2007, this tournament has been a staple for some of the best players in the world and this week is no different.

Course: Trump National Doral, also known as the Blue Monster used to play much easier. But a Gil Hanse redesigned put some teeth into the course and subsequently only THREE players broke par last year over 72 holes. The wind was up last year so I don’t expect it to play quite that difficult, but I still expect a stern test.

Par 72
7500+ Yards
Holes w/ Water in Play: 13
Greens: Bermuda Grass

Field: Small field this week of just 72 players, but ALL 50 of the OGWR top 50 players in the world are in the field this week. Adam Scott, Rory, Bubba, Rose, Sergio, Stenson…you name them, they’re there.

What to Look For: When researching what it takes to win here, nothing absolutely pops out, but a few things do stand out. Length is certainly an advantage. Even though shorter players have contended, no one averaging less that 288 yards off the tee has won here. It’s a lengthy course so that would seem to make sense here. With four par 5’s, length is also a distinct advantage as well. Another thing that really stood out to me was recent form. If you are searching to find your form coming into Doral, you may just want to head up to Tampa for next week’s tournament. Similar to Riviera, Doral is a tough test and no one coming off a missed cut has ever won here. Four of the eight winners had already won in the year of their victory and all eight winners had a top 10 to their name before arriving at Doral.

Free Pick:

Bubba Watson to win: Bubba is playing some outstanding golf and is certainly on Augusta watch for me. He has the length and recent form that we spoke of. He hasn’t finished outside the top 15 this season. He finished runner up here in 2014 and 2012. Let’s hope he goes one better this week.
