2015 The PLAYERS Championship

The Players Championship

Tournament: Golf’s 5th major is upon us and it truly is a world class field. As always, we head to Ponte Vedra, FL and Pete Dye’s legendary Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass for the 2015 Players Championship. The Players is certainly a world class event where the best players in the world will battle for the largest purse in golf. In fact, the purse is so large that the runner up will win over a million dollars this week. This is a great tournament and a great test of golf as you can see by the past winners.

2014 – Martin Kaymer (-13)
2013 – Tiger Woods (-13)

2012 – Matt Kuchar (-13)
2011 – K.J. Choi (-13)
2010 – Tim Clark (-16)
2009 – Henrik Stenson (-11)

Field: In my opinion, the best field in golf. All of the top 50 ranked players in the world will be here. That means, Rory, Spieth, Adam Scott, Day, Furyk, Fowler, etc. And the 125th ranked player in the world will be here as well, Tiger Woods.

What to Look For: In my opinion, TPC Sawgrass is the fairest test in all of golf. Some players absolutely hate the course but anytime a TOUR player doesn’t play well somewhere, they whine about it. The key to Sawgrass is to hit the fairways, then hit the green. The fairways are tight and the greens are small and the rough is thick. So having a game-plan and sticking to it would prove critical. There were some things that stood out when researching this event. These are all numbers based on the last 10 years of play. Strokes Gained tee to green is the most important stat of the week. The worst any winner has finished in the year of their win here is 57th and that was Kaymer last year. The average finish over the last 10 years is 26th. You rarely see statistical evidence that strong in any one stat for a tournament. Another trend is that no player has won here without a previous top 25 finish, That means knowing the course and performing well can go a long way at Sawgrass, We’ll look for players who fit these trends this week.

Free Pick:

Jordan Spieth to win: Sawgrass requires an all around game and that’s exactly what Spieth has. By my numbers, he played better than anyone at match play last week, but ran into a hot Westwood. Not much needs to be said but Spieth finished 4th here last year in his first appearance and he certainly wasn’t playing as well as he is now.

Good Luck
